5 minutes

03.22.05 (5:02 pm)   [edit]

Have you ever lost track of where you are at any given moment?  Its like you just wake up eventhough you've been awake the entire time.  Some people give it the name 'daydream', but thats a little different.  When you're daydreaming, you know what you were thinking about...you were somewhere else because you placed yourself there.  What I'm talking about is 'waking up' and wondering what the hell was going on for the past five minutes.  Time just seems to disappear into some other world and you sit there wondering if anything happened.  Its like you have a moment of amnesia, but only a moment.  Sometimes it may feel a little bit like deja-vu.  The weirdest part about it is that no time passed, it only feels like it did.  Ever felt that way?

I've been feeling like that fairly often and I'm not quite sure how to make sense of it or even if it makes any sense at all.  Its like my mind crossed over to an alternate universe while my body remained where it was.  Not really an out-of-body experience or anything like that...just a lapse of some sort.  Sometimes I actually remember what happened during the time that never passed and its a strange thing.  I'm not sure that it can be explained scientifically...though I am sure its got something to do with the communication between nerves or something...who knows.  What happens in the time that doesn't pass?  Its hard to explain, but I'll try.

Its kind of like a dream, but at the sime time its all too real to be a dream.  Its also like a memory, but a memory you aren't connected to.  Almost as if, for a brief moment, someone else decided to take control of your mind and place you in a virtual world rather than a real one.  Its like you were communicating with something deep within, but further away than you could ever imagine at the same time.  And all of the sudden you're sitting in front of your computer, listening to music, and looking at the clock that reads the same time you thought it was five minutes ago.  Although, a lot can happen in five minutes.

Some people think that your life span is no longer than five minutes, but no less than 100 years.  Explain that one.

i zone out sometimes when driving.
There is also a mild form of epilepsy where the person experience "mini mals" (not sure of the spelling). from the outside, it looks like the person has gone catatonic and they may even fall over, but quickly regain awareness.

I have those moments all the time. It's a bit odd, and I do tend to wonder where I go. As alms indicated, it seems to happen a lot while driving which is pretty scary if you think about it.

As for the great philosophical questions, some people also think our universe is but one grain of sand in an entire ocean of life. Who knows.

But it's fun to ponder, no? :)

Yes, Jen...it is rather fun to ponder. Which is also why I find myself fascinated with the idea that maybe with all the pondering, I too shall find some small recognition in myself. Though I may make no sense on that matter...what I mean to say is this is a life worth living only as long as we have the wonder.

I agree. I've read some research on genius and the commonalities that all geniuses seem to share; one of those common traits it that geniuses tend to maintain the ability to look at the world with wonder ~ as a child would. The rest of us, get that beaten out of us, you know. We stop wondering what it would be like to live on a blade of glass or how to bend light or things like that... but geniuses don't. They give the finger to the adults who tell them to sit up straight and put their mind on more grown-up pursuits. That said, wonder on my friend... wonder on. :)

Well, most of what anyone ever talks about is relative. It all depends on perspective and such. However, when you speak of living on a blade of grass...how big is it and in whos yard does it live? haha. Seriously though, I do not believe that anyone ever really stops wondering about things. I do believe, however, that their ability to wonder utilizing the imagination to the extent that you are speaking of may slowly deteriorate. This is only because of what growing up teaches us. Then again, one must wonder what it means to be 'grown up' or even more...what does it mean to be a child?

Isn't it strange how much we seek to define those very things, Chris? I mean... we apply legal ages that mark "being a grown up" and we label things "kid friendly" and lament "growing up too quickly." And yet, as you pointed out, none of us really know what either of those things are. Odd.

Yes, it is quite remarkable how profoundly stupid we all appear to be. The subject of age is a battle that will go on through the ages. Sadly, we will never have a concrete answer on what it all means...only a vague misconception on what we can accept.

Well, like all labels, they exist merely to comfort us. We are always most frightened by what we don't understand, so we slap labels on things lest they become a monster under our collective beds. Whether we're right or wrong is often irrelevent... what matters is we *believe* we can identify and classify the intangible.

Man, we're deep. :)

Lol. Deep. Yes. I suppose. ;-)

What you have just stated is how we have come upon the definition of 'cliche'. We label it so often that it becomes meaningless...and something that is meaningless is easy to understand! lol.

Enough! No more thought process tonite. My brain may become inactive and then I won't be able to post about 'real' life! ;-)

I feel compelled to reply! :)

I'll look forward to your stab at real life. Let me know how that works out. :)

I know what you are talking about....I get the same thing all of the time. I have heard that it is due to some kind of stress or something, but I have also heard of the mild epilepsy that alms mentioned. Maybe it's that damned time machine I have been working on malfunctioning. Do your ears ever ring around the time these flashes happen, or right when you come to?

My ears ring every so often. An old teacher of mine mentioned something about how the ringing in your ears is caused by the hairs 'laying down' inside of the ear. I'm not sure how much truth there is in that, but I suppose it makes enough sense. Mostly, I don't remember a whole lot about these 'experiences' except that it has a tendency to throw me off a little bit. At the same time it makes me somewhat more aware of certain things...like my sense of touch. Weird stuff, I tell you.

When I have similar types of experiences, my ears always ring during them. Maybe I just did too much acid in my past life in the 60's.

Einstien once stated in his theory of relativity that "the concept of time is merely relative" i'm paraphrasing here... but the way i think of it is alot clearer... Put your hands on a hot stove... mere seconds can seem like minutes of pain.... now put your hands on a hot woman/man, and mere minutes can seem like hours and hours and hours............ ;)
